I believe it is possible to eliminate poverty and infant mortality within our lifetimes. The people of India and China are making huge strides in improving their quality of life, and I strongly believe it is possible to help the rest of the world's people improve theirs as well. Further, there is no need to feel threatened by their growth, for there is enough for all.
Education is the key to growth, and it is what sets us apart from the rest of the living beings on our planet. Education is the model for all of our institutions, and so it is essential that education as a process is sane and free of pathological consequences. I am here to offer key improvements and suggestions for the way we educate ourselves and raise our children, and it is my goal that we use these improvements to raise the trajectory of human development.
A World That Makes Sense
A world that makes sense is a world that:
- is based on convincing, not coercing
- is based on love and sharing and gratitude, not power
- is based on creating abundance and worthwhile value
- is based on self-responsibility and cooperation
- is based on health and happiness for all
Three Demons
There are three raging demons loose in our global society today: Scarcity and Power and Negation. They each compound the others: a feeling of Scarcity creates the need for Power in some and Negation in others. This causes wild oscillations in the dynamics of society and real people suffer and die.
Humans are amazing beings and we are making great strides. The average lifespan in even the poorest countries is rising dramatically, and in developed countries most of those labeled "poor" have telephones and refrigerators and cars. Nonetheless, in the hour that I spend writing this page hundreds of children are starving to death. We must do better.
Throughout our history, most of our institutions have been built on a hierarchical basis. Someone at the top decides what is to be done, and tells the rest what to do. As the word travels down the pyramid, more and more pieces of the job get done. The three demons are the reason humans developed the pyramid, and the pyramid is what keeps the demons alive. Because of the Scarcity mentality, only some humans have the Power to tell the rest what to do, and because of Scarcity the rest of us believe that there is not enough power to go around, and so we Negate ourselves, believing that we cannot create change. Needless to say, those in Power also have guns and bombs to make sure they keep the Power which is so scarce.
We live in a world where change is occurring incredibly rapidly. I was born before there were a hundred computers, but my sons live in a connected world. It's not just technology. We are on the brink of possible pandemics that could wipe out millions because viruses have learned to survive even our strongest anti-biotics. Social change is occurring at a breakneck pace, and the change is painful for many. Who would have imagined forty years ago that the phrase "job security" would become a pathetic oxymoron?
Hierarchy of control -- authoritarianism -- is built into the very fabric of our entire society and the way we are brought up to think. We must grow beyond the three demons and their pyramids because we need to be self-responsible and creative and cooperative in order to survive and thrive in this wonderful but challenging new world of rapid change.
Convince, not CoerceTM
How can we escape these demons and learn to thrive? What are the shackles that keep us Negated and Power-less and mired in Scarcity? It is actually very simple: You make three choices, right here and right now.
- I live in a world filled with abundance and I have things I can share and trade for whatever I need to get ahead.
- I am wholly and completely responsible for myself and everything I do, and I will not give up control of anything that affects me until I am completely convinced of the value of doing so.
- I am worthy of being in control of myself, I deserve to live well, and I have much to offer!
Convince by ExampleTM
There are many hundreds of thousands of people who model success every moment. They range from the bank manager who makes customer service an art to the student who chooses to make a major illness the focus of his life and stands by that choice. The art of life is in realizing its value to yourself and others as you design examples of living moment by moment. We don't always succeed in accomplishing high drama, but, as theatrical artists proclaim, "the Show's the thing!" More specifically, participating consciously in the Show is the thing, and becoming aware of how much of our participation is driven by our sub-conscious minds, A-B-C, and our emotions.
